Two Wadena Men Killed In Action In Europe - Pfc. Bengtson and Sgt. Lorentz Lose Lives in Combat
News of the death of two Wadena men who lost their lives in combat duty in the European war theatre reached relatives here within the last week.
Mrs. David Bengtson received a message from the government Monday stating that her husband, Pfc. David Bengtson, was killed in action in Italy on September 18.
Pfc. Bengtson had been overseas since April 1942, and had served with the 34th division in the African campaign and had fought at Anzio and Cassino. He was fighting on the mountains in northern Italy when he was mortally wounded.
David was born on Jan. 21, 1915 in Sebeka. He attended school here and graduated from Wadena high school in 1933. Before entering the service he worked in Wadena and Minneapolis. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and sports of all kinds, and had many friends in this community.
Pfc. Bengtson and Mary Wokasen were married Aug. 25, 1940 at the Catholic parish in Wadena.
Surviving are his wife and father, Sheriff John Bengtson, of Wadena, a brother, Arvid of Anoka, and four sisters, Mrs. Carl Ostrum (Hannah) of Walker, Mrs. Earl Andrews (Eva), Mrs. C.A. Kraemer (Vera), and Mrs. Charles Van Duzee (Helen) all of Wadena.
The last time David had been home was to attend his sister Helen's wedding in October, 1941. However, his wife spent three months with him at Fort Dix prior to the time he left for overseas.
