Double Tragedy on Farm at Tecumseh
Tecumseh, Nebr., July 14 - Edwin J. Howerth [sic], 65, and his son, Henry, 16, lost their lives when they were gassed by fumes of picric [sic] acid in an old well on the farm, two miles southeast of this city Saturday. They had thrown the acid into the well to destroy some old casing. Some time later the youth descended to see what had been the result of the explosion. He was overcome by the fumes and his father went to his rescue and was also quickly overcome.
Harry Van Winkle, a workman, then descended into the well and was also partly overcome. He was rescued by William Ward. The bodies were taken out of the well with difficulty and removed to the house, half a mile away. Edwin Howerth has lived here most of his life and was a prominent progressive farmer and stockman. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mary, Clara and Marguerite, and two brothers, Alfred and Lawrence Howerth of Tecumseh.
