George V. Wright, 87, of Massena, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena. Committal services with full military honors will be held Friday August 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Pine Grove Cemetery II, Norfolk, with Rev. Jeff Aiosa , Pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

George is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Rita; his children, Linda and Gary Dishaw of Massena, Thomas and Lucy Wright of Electra, TX, and Kim and Ed Calhoun of Wichita Falls, TX; stepchildren, Janet and Robert LaRose of Newark, Sue Heil of Massena, and Larry White of Saratoga Springs; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and seven step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Martin; and a brother, Elwood in infancy.

George was born on March 21, 1924 in Kingston, the son of Oscar and Addie (Reddick) Wright. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in WW II having been a member of the Merrill's Marauders Rangers and received two Purple Hearts and earned a Bronze Star in the Burma Theater. He also earned the Combat Infantrymen Badge. Following his discharge he returned to Massena and partnered with his father Oscar Wright, constructing homes. George was married to the former Margaret Kearns who preceded him in death. He later owned and operated Wright Motel on Route 37 in Massena; he was also was a self-employed carpenter in Massena. George married Rita Deshaies White on October 24, 1974 in Massena. George and his wife spent 10 years in Cape Coral, Florida.

George was a Life Member of the VFW # 1143, Royal Arch Masons Knights Templar, 50 year plus member of the Masonic Lodge 513, and a past member of the Shiners Media Temple. George was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church. Among George's many interests, he was an avid model train buff, creating roads, landscapes, buildings and tracks in the HO gauge. He enjoyed fishing on the St. Lawrence and Raquette Rivers and his daily morning visits to the Via Main Restaurant for coffee.
