William (born Wilhelm) was the son of August and Augusta Gesch. He immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings August, Marie, Gustav and Emma in 1893 aboard the ship Weimar from Bremerhaven to New York. They settled in Nebraska.
With his first wife Mathilda Thisius he had two sons William George and Earl William Gesch.
After Mathilda's death he married Mary Jane (McClain) Allen, widow of James Allen.
