He completed basic training and four months of radio school at Ft. Sill, Ok. He was assigned to the 654th Tank Destroyer Bn. At Camp Gordon, GA. January 1943.
The 654th was shipped to Moy, North Ireland, September 1943. Then to England inApril 1944. Embarked to France on July 11, 1944. Bob was captured near Mortain, France Aug. 8, 1944, along with Col. W.V. Martz, Battalion Commander. Was interned at Stalag 3-C Kuestrin, Germany. He was liberated Jan. 28, 1945 by the Russians. Walked and rode box cars to Odessa, Russia. Arrived back in the States May 14, 1945. Discharged at Ft. Smith, AR on October 1945.
He was a retired nursing home administrator, living in Imperial, NE. Survived by wife Phyllis, two sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren.
