He was the son of John Mickey and Elizabeth Gearhart.

The boyhood days were spent in his native State, where he received his education in the common schools, and at the age of fourteen he went to Shelbyville, Ind., where he resided until 1836, when he came to Iowa, making his home with his uncle, Stephen W. Gearhart, for nine years.

He was an early pioneer in Iowa and settled at Burlington, Iowa in 1836, and there in 1844 he was married. Soon after he removed to Louisa county, Iowa, and purchased a small farm on time, which he converted into a home and there resided until his death, which occurred in the autumn of 1892 when he was on a visit to his children in Nebraska.

He was a prominent layman of the Methodist Protestant church and did much toward the building up of his denomination during the early days of Iowa.
