Adelardo Gonzales, 72, passed away Sunday evening after a courageous 16 month battle with cancer. Born January 23, 1939 in Niac, Cavite, Philippines to Delfin L.Gonzales and Mercedes Villa Nazareno, Adelardo joined the United States Navy at the age of 20. As a Vietnam War veteran and a Master Chef, "Speedy" performed shore duty at 5 different ports and sea duty on several Navy vessels totaling 21 years of military service. After a blissful marriage to Betty June Roberts of Pensacola, Florida in 1964, he became a US Citizen in the early 1970's. Adelardo and Betty were blessed with three boys and three girls. After his military career, he became a "jack of all trades" with many hobbies including fishing, restoring automobiles, and collecting firearms. As a member of the "Who Dat Nation," one of the final chapters of his remarkable life was to witness the New Orleans Saints become Super Bowl Champions. Adelardo was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by wife, Betty; sons, Del, Eddie and Raymond; daughters, Lanie (Jonathan) Waugh, Katina and Amy (Christopher) Tolbert, and six granddaughters. He is also survived by his mother, Mercedes; brothers Edgar (Linda) and Delfin (Nenita); sisters, Edith (Rudolfo) Punzalan, Teresita (Efran) Lobaton, Milagroas, Norma (Loree) Cuevas and Rebecca (Ramon) Faunal; and a host of nieces and nephews in Florida, California, Canada, and the Philippines. Services will be held at 9 AM on Friday, August 19, 2011 with visitation at 8:30 AM preceding the service at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Special thanks to the ICU staff and doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital, especially Kathleen who extended exceptional care and special attention. HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
