John Smith Cater was born October 17, 1850 in Wood County, Texas, son of William Cater (1813-1872) and Matilda Roberson (1818-1858). The Tennessee State Marriages records show that William Cater and Matilda Roberson married in Williamson County, Tennessee on November 31, 1843.

The 1860 Federal Census for Precinct 8, Texas (Wood County) shows John Cater, age 8, born in Texas; living with his father, William, a farmer, age 47, born in South Carolina. Also living in the household were John's siblings, Mary A. Cater, age 14; and William M. Cater, age 12; both born in Alabama. In addition, William's mother, Nancy Cater, age 83, born in South Carolina was living with the family.

J. S. Cater, age 92, died at the family home at 301 East Arkansas on Sunday, April 18, 1943. The deceased was born in Wood County, Texas in 1850. Funeral services Monday at the Church of God, with burial in Highland Cemetery. Surviving are three sons, five daughters, 30 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
