BENJAMIN WESTFALL

Benjamin Westfall was the son of James Westfall and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsey" Macomber. The family was living in Galen, Wayne Co., NY, in the 1850 U.S. Census. They were living in Michigan by 1859. Benjamin enlisted in the Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. The account below addresses this:

"Benjamin Westfall, Hudson. Enlisted in Company F, Fourth Infantry, as Corporal, June 20, 1861, at Adrian, for 3 years, age 22. Height 5 feet, 8 inches. Complexion fair. Eyes blue. Hair brown. Butcher by trade. Brother of James, John, Daniel, Sarah, William, Charles, Martin, Everett, and Marilla; he had thirteen siblings.

"Mustered June 20, 1861. First Sergeant August 1861. Commissioned Second Lieutenant March 7, 1863. Mustered March 7, 1863. Wounded in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1863, shot in right hand. Commanding company from August 1863 to April 1864. Wounded in action, shot in knee, June 19, 1864.

"Mustered out at expiration of term of service at Detroit, Michigan, June 29, 1864. Was in every action of the 4th Infantry. Re-enlisted in Company G, Thirty Michigan Infantry, January 9, 1865. Muster out June 30, 1865. Suffered from chronic diarrhea after service. Resided in Hudson, Michigan after war. Carpenter and Justice of the peace after war. Died July 20, 1925 by drowning. Buried Maple Grove Cemetery, Hudson Michigan."

Benjamin Westfall married 13 Mar. 1865, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, to Helen Cecelia Van Akin, daughter of Dudley L. Van Akin and his wife Betsy Barker. Westfall Children: Ralph, Bessie, Minnie, Frank, Ivy, and Grace.
