Born on the Bayou Desiard, Maria first married Lorenzo Addison Griffing (1813-1839) on July 15, 1833. Lorenzo was originally from Oak Ridge, LA. They had three children: William Lorenzo Griffing (1839-1862), John Williams Griffing (1837-1862), and Julia Temperance Griffing (born about 1836). Maria's 1st husband, Lorenzo, is also buried in the Roark Cemetery. According to family, he chose a tree as his marker, which has since fallen. Maria and her second husband, T.J. Stewart, raised a daughter of John W. Griffing and Narcissa McGuire Griffing, Narcissa Frances Griffing Hopkins (1859-1943).
