Fred left the family farm to serve in France in World War I. Returning to his French roots--his maternal grandfather and paternal grandparents were all born in France--he served as a French translator during the war.

After his military service, he returned to work the farm in Dingman Township, outside Milford, Penna. He remained single, dwelling with his widowed half-sister, Adele.

He died of cancer in the Wilkes-Barre, Penna., VA hospital.
