James Edward was the son of James P. and Alice L. Akin. James P. was once a Marshall in Johnson County, Texas. Identified siblings were: Thomas H., Henrietta, Joseph, Roy Durwood, and Paul Merritt.

On 6 May 1898, Santa Fe, New Mexico; James E. Akin enlisted as a Private with Troop G of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (The Rough Riders). On 7 May 1898, Santa Fe; he mustered into service. He was described as a native of Cleveland, Texas; age 22 years (B: ~1876), 5 feet and 9-1/2 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, and a cattleman. It was also recorded that he had a gunshot wound on his left thigh. On 17 May 1898, at a camp near San Antonio, Texas; he mustered again with the same description. On 15 Sep 1898, James E. Akin and his Troop were mustered out of service at Camp Wikoff, Long Island, New York. There, he was described as a resident of Dolores, Colorado (muster papers). During the Spanish American War in Cuba, Troop G was involved at the Battle of Las Guasimas, the Battle of San Juan Heights, and the Siege of Santiago de Cuba.

Around 1901, James married Eva C. Nunn. Identified children were: Merwyn E., Alice D., and James Preston. Another unidentified child was deceased before 1910. James was a farmer, meat merchant, and stock raiser.
