Assisted husband with livestock/auto auction
Margaret L. Sponenberg, 90, of Hillside Village, Catawissa, passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13, 2011, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Hemlock Township, Columbia County, and was a daughter of the late Luis and Flossie Pegg Lizardi.
Margaret attended schools in Columbia and Northumberland counties.
Margaret worked for the former Regal and Emenee shirt factories in Catawissa; Milco and Bloomsburg Mills in Bloomsburg, and for many years, assisted her husband in managing the Danville Livestock and Auto Auction.
She was a avid reader, loved gardening — particularly her flowers, horse racing and NASCAR.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David John Sponenberg, who died on July 11, 1994, ending a marital span of 54 years. She also was preceded in death by daughters: Marjean Manhart, who died in 1996, and Kimberley Manhart, who died in 1998; a sister: Thelma McGlenn, and a brother: Bobbie Lizardi.
She is survived by two sons: David P. Sponenberg and his wife Darla, of Lime Ridge, and Lewis "Bob" Sponenberg and his wife Darlia, of Orangeville; five daughters:, JoAnne Cleaver and her husband David, Nancy Briesch and her husband James, all of Bloomsburg; Barbara Richenderfer, of Lime Ridge; Kathleen Yeager, South Carolina, and Gayle Yocum, of Bloomsburg; 17 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and two brothers: Lewis Lizardi and his wife Ruth, and Eugene Lizardi.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. from the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Catawissa. Visitation for friends will be held Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
