Shirley E. Murray age 76 of Maple Grove passed from this life on August 13, 2011 after a courageous, incredibly hard fought 38 year battle with Cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Pine Island with Father Randal Kasel officiating. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Shirley Elaine Swarthout was born on January 4, 1935 in Rochester, MN to Merle and Olive (nee Cowden) Swarthout. She grew up in Pine Island and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1953. On November 24, 1954 she married Maurice Murray in Rochester.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 56 years, Maurice; daughters, Terri (Redgie) Reznicek of Elk River and Kathy (Mike) Schultz of Maple Grove; sons, Jeff (Colleen) Murray of Port Isabel, TX, Greg (Leigh) Murray of Maple Grove and Steve (Debbie) Murray of Champlin; twelve grandchildren, Jackie, Ben, Shane, Jacob, Ashley, Erica, Julie, Jason, Matt, Jennifer, Megan and Austin; 2 step-grandchildren, Angela and Michael; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn (Floyd) Nord of Rochester and Louann Denny of Monticello; brothers, Clifford (Joan) Swarthout of Pine Island and Richard Swarthout of Garrison. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Glenn, Wayne and Carl.

Shirley was the type of person who always put other people's needs before her own and was one of the most loving, caring individuals to ever grace this earth. She was also a tough person who always forged ahead and persevered through her struggles with Cancer, approaching each challenge with the attitude that she wouldn't be beat. She enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life.

Our family would like to thank the many relatives and friends for their incredible support and generosity during this extremely difficult time and we sincerely appreciate your efforts to comfort Mom and our family. Words cannot describe what you all meant to Mom and what you all mean to us going forward as we enter this next phase of our lives. We would also like to thank Dr. Phillip Worrell for his many years as Mom's primary care Physician, the countless and tireless Doctors, nurses and staff at the Mayo Clinic who touched our lives over the years, and North Memorial Hospice Care (especially Lou and Angie) for their relentless pursuit of comfort for Mom during her final journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be designated for cancer research at the Mayo Clinic.
