Not to be confused with Dr. Alexander Fleming that discovered penicillin (1881-1955), Dr. Alexander Fleming of Brandon, Manitoba, moved to the new city in 1881 and first opened his “Apothecaries Hall” in a tent on the corner of Rosser and 8th Street. Dr. Fleming would be on the first board of Governors to help get the Brandon General Hospital established in the city, where he would later work for the rest of his years.

His death impacted hundreds in the city and his body was laid out for five days for people to mourn.

His house, the “Villa Louise”, at 707 Louise Avenue is a designated heritage site.

The late Fleming School was named in his honour, he was also on the first School Board in Brandon.

An impressive 6-metre-tall obelisk stands in the Brandon Cemetery to mark his gravesite.
