Thera Frances Kelly McCoy, age 102, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at
Redstone Village in Huntsville, AL. She was born in Escambia County, Alabama to
the late Charlie and Mini Kyser Kelly and grew up in Repton, AL. She was a 1928
graduate from Huntingdon College with an AB Degree in English, a teacher
certificate and a diploma in dramatic arts. Following the death of her husband,
Les, she managed McCoy Timber Company, investments and commercial property in
Destin, Florida and Atmore. She was proud of being the first to bring the
Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises to Atmore. She was a member of
First United Methodist Church where she taught youth and adult Sunday school,
had leadership roles in United Methodist Women. She also played the organ at
McRae United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Ft Mims Daughters of the
American Revolution. She was talented in china and oil painting, sewing,
gardening and public speaking. She enjoyed playing bridge and dominos.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Bateson McCoy; parents, Charles
Samuel and Mini Kyser Kelly; in-laws, Jesse Edgar and Anna Camp McCoy; a son,
Marvin Eugene McCoy; three brothers, Lamar, Charles, and Samuel Kelly and a
sister, Betty Luttrell.

Mrs. McCoy is survived by her daughter, Betty Frances Vaughan and her husband,
Otha H. “Skeet” of Huntsville; a son, Louis Raynor McCoy of Amite, LA., three
grand-daughters: Thera Virginia Vaughan of Birmingham, AL, Leslie Vaughan Pruitt
and husband, Wade of Cullman, AL. and Frances Elizabeth Kirby and husband,
Clifton of Huntsville; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Paul Pruitt, Leslie
Clay Pruitt, Khele Ann Kirby and Nathan Bryant Kirby and several nieces and
nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Atmore First
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Reece officiating. Burial followed at
Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. until
service time at First United Methodist Church.
A memorial service was held Monday, October 18, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Latham United
Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL. with the family receiving friends
immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church,
Atmore or Latham United Methodist Church, Huntsville, for the Buchanan
Scholarship fund.
