Albert W. Bement Dies; Spanish War Veteran

Confined to the U.S. Veterans’ Hospital in Bath for some time, Albert W. Bement, 42 South St., retired prison guard and veteran of the Spanish-American War died there Wednesday night, June 12, 1940. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bertha Kenyon Bement; a sister, Mrs. Ola Munz of Sea Breeze, and two nieces.

Mr. Bement was a guard at Auburn Prison during the two riots that broke out there in July and December, 1929. He was appointed a guard at Clinton Prison April 1, 1909, and was transferred to Great Meadows Prison on July 15, 1911. On April 1, 1923, he was transferred back to Clinton and on August 16, 1926, he came to Auburn Prison, where he remained until his retirement, Sept. 4, 1937.

He was past commander of Major Louis B. Lawton Camp, Spanish-American War Veterans, and a member of Cayuga Lodge, Knights of Pythias; Auburn Tent, Maccabees, and the Prison Guards’ Association.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in a funeral home, 91 E. Genesee St. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Throop. (Source: Rochester Times-Union, Rochester, New York, Friday Evening, June 14, 1940, page 3-A.
