NORMAN EDWARD ROOD, of Barboursville, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at his residence.

He was born on November 3, 1921, a son of the late Milton Rood and Rhoda Rood. He grew up in Huntington on 30th Street East -- around the corner from the watchful eyes of Lula Mae Keeling, his maternal grandmother.

In 1942, upon his graduation from East High, he enlisted in the Army and served as Sergeant with the 1177 Engineers in New Caledonia and Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Army at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., on April 3, 1945, he enrolled at WV University.

On Nov. 22, 1946 he married Mabel Rosalee Beall, daughter of Charles and Una Beall. In 1952 he graduated from WVU College of Law. For 57 years, Mabel's care and affection enabled him to attain the good life. He is survived by their daughters, Markie Johnson and her husband, Michael, Deborah Rood and her husband, Andrew Grimes, Pamela Mills and Theresa Chambers and her husband, John, and by seven grandchildren, Josh Chambers, Kayla Chambers, Sarah Mills, Katie Mills, Andy Mills, Matthew Johnson and his wife, Megan, and Barrett Johnson and his wife, Dania. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah, and brothers, Sterling, Clarence, Gene, Fred and Raymond. A private funeral service was conducted by the family on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Emogene Dolin-Jones Hospice House, Huntington, in Norman's honor. Beard Mortuary is assisting the family. www.beardmortuary.com.
