Mt. Carroll, Ill., Jan. 21.—John W. Smith, 77, passed away about 9 o'clock Wednesday night at the home of a nephew, Allen Smith, in Mt. Carroll. He was born Feb. 10, 1865, in Mt. Carroll, the son of [William] Washington and Margaret [Meister] Smith. He resided on a farm west of Mt. Carroll all of his life until five month ago when he moved to Mt. Carroll to make his home with his nephew. His wife, formerly May Christian, passed away In 1931. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Earl Bancroft, of Dubuque, Ia., and one brother, Charles Smith, of Mt. Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Christian funeral home. Burial will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. -- Freeport Journal Standard, pg. 16, Jan. 21, 1943
