According to the obituary of his daughter, Elizabeth D. (Jones) Turner, Chauncey Jones moved to Jefferson when he was 12 years old, thus in 1820. As his parents remained in Berne, moving to Huntersland between 1830-1840, it is likely he came to live with his older brothers, Amos and Eli, who established the relatively new town's first leather tanning operation in 1810. (1)

In every US Federal Census beginning 1850, he is listed as a leather tanner and shoemaker.

In the tenth stipulation of the will of his brother, Thaddeus Jones (1796-1867) dated January 31, 1867, ". . . . I give and bequeath to my Brother Chauncey of Jefferson Schoharie County one hundred and fifty dollars." (2)
