J. B. Tatum, Former Sheriff, Shoots Self.

John B. Tatum, a former sheriff of Chambers County, pulled the trigger of a pistol last Sunday night at 9 o'clock sending a leadened bullet through the left temple which killed him instantly, according to reports and accounts from Opelika this week.
Former Sheriff Tatum was stricken with paralysis several years ago, and since that time his physical condition was such that he was forced to go by the aid of a crutch. It is said this prolonged ill health over which he had brooded for the past several months was the cause of the fatal stroke. Reports say that he sent one of his sons to summon a physician just a few minutes before 9 o'clock Sunday night, and on his return he found the father wounded and dead.
The deceased was a former citizen of LaFayette and Chambers County, having lived here the greater part of his life, moving to Opelika about three months ago where he was actively connected with the Tatum Motor Company. He was sheriff of Chambers County for two terms, making what his friends claim a fearless and competent officer. He retired from active political circles when ill health besieged him several years ago. He was a man of many friends, probably few men had more friends in Chambers County than did he.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. T. H. Johnson, of LaFayette; Rev. W. F. McCann, of Opelika; Rev. R. M. Archibald, presiding elder of the Roanoke District, and Rev. N. H. Abernathy, a boyhood friend of the deceased, officiating. Interment was in the LaFayette Cemetery an hour later.
Surviving the deceased are two sons, Howard Tatum and Jack Tatum. His wife died several years ago. Four brothers also survive, A. C. Tatum, of Opelika; C. A. Tatum, of West Point; L. D. Tatum, of Birmingham, and S. H. Tatum, of Roanoke.
The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church of LaFayette, A Mason, Shriner, Knights of Pythias and Elk. He leaves hosts of warm friends to mourn his death.
