Ida was the daughter of a christian missionary from the great state of Missouri. She went to Idaho in the early 1890s as a missionary herself. Her brother also came out further west. In 1891 she became the teacher of the second school ever in Bonner's Ferry. She received glowing reports from the local newspaper for the excellent way she managed the school. In 1892 she quit the school with the intention of visiting California but ended up marrying Ben Hemminger. They had 2 children and relocated to Bellingham Washington. Her husband died in a mining accident in 1910. She survived him by 21 years. During those 21 years her children settled firmly in Bellingham and began raising their families. The Hemminger and Tippie families are descendants of Ida.
