Anna was the sixth child of James and Anne Eliza (Lyons) McLaughlin. She was the third oldest to make it to adulthood, marry and have children. This family moved to America from County Antrim, Ireland in 1845, coming up the Mississippi River to Illinois.

Anna is born in Walnut Hill, Marion County, Illinois in 1853, presumably while the family is saving money to purchase property. Best guess is they are farm laborers at the time of her birth.

Anna married Thomas Calvin Morton in 1870 at her parents' home, the same weekend her brother Joseph Knox McLaughlin married Thomas' little sister Tirzah. In 1920, these two couples celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries together on the same property of Section 11, Raccoon Township in Marion County, Illinois. Hundreds of neighbors and fellow parishioners celebrated with them and there are many photos of the event.

After Anna and her husband married, they soon were found in Princeton, Indiana. There Thomas is a farmer and is very involved in the church. They stay in this area from the 1870s until around 1903-05, when they move to Rice, Virginia. Thomas is listed as a dairy man in the 1910 census. Also, Anna Eliza's mother -- also named Anne Eliza -- is with them until her death in 1906 in Rice, Virginia.

Anna has four children, all four making it to adulthood and having children.
