The BRONZE STAR MEDAL (POSTHUMOUS) is awarded to RICHARD W. TWOMBLY, 0549791, Second Lieutenant, Infantry, Company K, 232nd Infantry, for heroic service in action on 6 January 1945, near Kilstett, France. Leading a combat patrol of Company K near Kilstett, France, Lieutenant Twombly, as platoon leader of the third platoon, was given the mission of locating the strength and disposition of enemy forces. While proceeding across an embankment his patrol was pinned down by enemy small arms and mortar fire. In an attempt to maintain his precarious position and to gain a better understanding of the situation, he fearlessly exposed himself until fatally wounded by an enemy grenade thrown at close range. Lieutenant Twombly's outstanding courage and determination contributed immeasurably to the success of his mission.
