The former Sylvia Vetting was born on May 24, 1917, in the town of Manitowoc Rapids, daughter of the late Walter and Charlotte (Tech) Vetting. She was a 1936 graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School. Sylvia married Milton R. Schwalbe on November 1, 1941, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newtonburg. He preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 2003. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and St. John Ladies Aid. The couple owned and operated Twin Elm Dairy Farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids. Sylvia and Milton enjoyed winters in Holiday, Fla., after their retirement. Sylvia enjoyed volunteering at the Manitowoc Lutheran High School's Repeat Performance Resale Store in Manitowoc.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law; Charles (Melissa) Schwalbe, Boonsboro, MD; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Karen Schwalbe, Milwaukee; Barbara (William) Thorrington, East Troy; Sarah (Michael) Bentzler, Milwaukee: seven granddaughters: Tamra (Christopher) Hibner; Christine Thorrington; Renee (Jeremy) Erdmann; Stephanie (Michael) Bernier; Rebecca (Chad) Bollweg; Katharine Schwalbe; Elizabeth (Sean) Reeb; nine great-grandchildren: Joel, Ella, Adam, Madison, Jordan, Jacob, Emily, Aiden, Ownen; one sister-in-law: Alice Nass, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents: Walter and Charlotte Vetting; her husband, Milton Schwalbe; three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Lilah (Guy) Hovland; Leona Murphy; Doris (Connie) Helgeson.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newtonburg. The Rev. Victor Headrick will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 4 to 8pm and again on Tuesday from 9:30am until the time of service at 11am.
Memorial donations would be appreciated for either St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or Manitowoc Lutheran High School.
