SOLOMON J. BEAR DEAD

Widely Known Attorney Succumbs to Complications and Heart Trouble

Mr. Solomon J. Bear, 67, one of Madison's oldest attorneys in point of service, passed away at his home, 701 east Main street at 10:00 a.m. today following an illness of several months during which he had suffered from complications and heart trouble.

He had been bedfast only a few days but he had been unable to go to his office since last spring. His last appearance in court was in the Lawler will case.

Mr. Bear, a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Bear, was born on Pleasant Ridge. He graduated from the Ryker's Ridge high school and after attending Hanover college for a time he took up the study of law, with his brother, P.E. Bear, who preceded him in death a year ago.

After studying with his brother for a few years he became a partner in the law firm of Sulzer & Bear, a firm that was widely known in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. At the retirement of Mr. M. R. Sulzer, who for several years has been affiliated with the Sulzer Brothers crude drug company, the firm of Bear & Bear, attorneys was formed, the other member of the firm being his son, Donald R. Bear.

Mr. Bear's first public office was that of city attorney, a position he held when he was married to Mr. Elizabeth Reul Bear. Since their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bear and family have made their home in this city.

He had practiced law for more than forty years and during that time he had served as county attorney for the county board of commissioners for several years and as attorney for the Citizens' building and loan association. For a number of years he served as president of the city school board and in that capacity he gave freely of his time and services for the welfare of the community at large. He was relived of his duties on the school board only a year ago when he was succeeded by his nephew, Otis G. Reed.

Mr. Bear was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Knights of Pythias lodge. He was the last member of his immediate family and leaves only his widow and one son, Donald Reul Bear, besides several nieces and nephews.

Since he began the practice of law he had maintained his office at its present location at 305 east Main street.

Funeral services will be held at the residence Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jesse M. Tidball officiating. Interment will be made at Springdale cemetery.
