Laurin Bryan Askew Sr was born on August 29, 1863 in Eufaula, Alabama, the son of Bryan Askew and Nina/Mima (Lauren) Askew (ca 1836- ). {His Death Certificate lists his birth place as Eufaula, Alabama, while his obituary has him born in Vicksburg, Mississippi.} He was 11 years old when he and his widowed mother moved to Clarksville, Tennessee.

After high school Laurin attended Stewart College {later known as Southwestern Presbyterian University}, and upon graduation he was employed by Owen & Moore Druggists, AND, on November 11, 1886 he was married to Florence Couts (1865-1951), the daughter of John Franklin Couts (1818–1897) and his 2nd wife Carrie E (Patton) Couts (1849–1887).

Laurin later bought Owen & Moore and formed a partnership with Thomas Edwards. Later still he partnered with Lacy Lockert, and that continued until 1906 when Askew-Coulter-Owen Drug Company was founded.

He was a member of the board of aldermen and mayor from the Third Ward, was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a director of Northern Bank of Tennessee and was affiliated with Pythagoras Lodge IOOF and Cumberland lodge of Knights of Pythias.

A retired and living in Clarksville, Laurin was 64 years old, married and had chronic Bright's disease when he had a paralytic stroke and died on October 25, 1927.

Survivors included his widow Florence, sons Lauren B Askew Jr, John Couts Askew and Harley L Askew and six grandchildren.

Burial was on October 27th in Greenwood Cemetery, Clarksville.
