CHELSEA -- Gerald F. Acheson, age 85, of Togus Road, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Togus Veterans Affairs Hospital, Chelsea, following a long illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 19, 1920, a son of the late Edward Acheson and Marie (Thomas) Acheson.
Mr. Acheson served honorably as a Corporal in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Gerald had his own sheet metal shop for many years. Not long after his marriage to his second wife, Joyce (St. Pierre) Acheson, they bought land on Eagle Lake where he built them a retirement home which they enjoyed for almost 20 years. They spent many days fishing from the boat he built.
He was a kind and gentle man, always ready to help others. He was a very devout Catholic and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He loved going to Mass at the Togus Chapel on Sundays and often during the week.
Gerald was also an avid gardener.
Mr. Acheson was pre-deceased by his parents; his first wife, Sylvia (Yokell) Acheson; an adopted daughter, Connie Johnson and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, who will miss this loving man dearly, Joyce (St. Pierre) Acheson of Chelsea; an adopted son, Paul; Connie's husband, Danny and their adopted daughter, Heidi; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial with military honors will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
