Harlan enlisted for Civil War army service in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at Elyria, Ohio(Lorain County), August 4, 1962, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. He was wounded in the hip at the Battle of Armstrong's Hill, November 25, 1863, south of Knoxville, Tennessee. He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability, June 27, 1864, at Cleveland, Ohio.

He passed away in Carlisle Twp., Lorain Co., OH. His name is on the base of the Civil War Soldier monument at Butternut Ridge Cemetery. His give name is misspelled "Harland" on the monument.
