THE ALTUS TIMES DEMOCRAT, AUG.19,1945,ERNEST HATHAWAY DIED SUDDENLY OF HEART ATTACK ERNEST HATHAWAY,43,one of the most widely known peace officers in S.W.OK.,died at the City Police Station Sat.at 5:30 PM.A few minutes after suffering a Heart Attack.HATHAWAY had accompanied GUY ELEY,another member of the Altus Police Force,on a call to Arrest ARTHUR BOX of Seymore,Texas who was creating a disturbance in on South Main Street.BOX against whom charges of being drunk and disturbing the peace have been filed,put up resistance and the officers had trouble getting him in the Police car,it was reported.ELEY said he observed that HATHAWAY showed signs of exhaustion but he was not alarmed until HATHAWAY slumped in the back seat of the car a few blocks from the Police Station.He died within a few minutes after being brought to the Police Station.HATHAWAY had been a Law Enforcement Officer in Jackson County since about 1930.He served for a while as City Marshal at Blair and later was Deputy Sheriff at Eldorado.He was named Under-Sheriff by Sheriff HENRY SAVAGE in 1933 and continued in that position when HENRY KIMBELL became Sheriff in Jan.1937.HATHAWAY resigned his county position in 1940 and was Special Agent for the Frisco Railroad for five years.He joined the City Police Force two weeks ago.HATHAWAY was born April24,1902 at Whitesboro,Texas.His parents moved to a farm near Blair two years later and he had made his home in Jackson County since then.He was a member of the Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge.
