He was wounded on July 27, 2002 during an attack in Afghanistan and died at the military hospital at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on August 6, 2002. He died of a head wound suffered when his reconnaissance patrol was ambushed near Khowst, in eastern Afghanistan. Six days prior to being wounded, he had walked into a minefield to rescue two wounded Afghan children. He applied a tourniquet to one child and bandaged the other. Then he stopped a passing military truck to take the wounded children to a US Army field hospital, saving their lives. He enlisted in the Army in July, 1992. After completing basic combat training, he graduated from the medical-specialist course and was assigned to the Army Hospital at Carlisle Barracks, PA. In November 1994, he volunteered and was selected for Special Forces training. He completed training in early 1997 as a Special Forces medical sergeant. He was assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg in May 1997. He remained in the 3rd Group for several years until he was assigned to US Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg. Among his military awards and decorations were the Soldiers Medal; Bronze Star Medal for
valor; Purple Heart; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service
