The first Sabbath school composed of colored people, in Lawrence county was organized by D.M. Alter and his daughter Maggie, in the brick building now owed by the colored Baptist people.

Howard Alter, of St. Louis, and sister, Mrs. Mary Barton, of Mitchell were in Campbellsburg Tuesday. Their parents were Mr. and Mrs. David M. Alter, who owned and resided on the farm now owned by John L. Brown, one mile north of Campbellsburg. The Alter family moved to near Mitchell in 1869. Mr. Alter, the father, will be remembered by our older citizens, as a worker in the cause of Sunday schools

David M. Alter, who at one time, owned and resided on the farm now owned by John Brown, one mile north of Campbellsburg, died in Illinois 39 years ago, and was buried at Mitchell.
