Robert L. Baugh to Be Buried Here.

Robert L. Baugh, a former resident of LaFayette, who was at one time connected with the local Central of Georgia Railway Company office, died at his home in Memphis, Tenn., last Sunday afternoon after a protracted illness of several years. He was formerly connected with the Central of Georgia Railway Company of Savannah as chief purchasing agent. Illness forced him however to relinquish his active connection with the Central. He was connected with the company for 49 years.
Deceased was a very prominent figure during his active life, having scores of friends here at his former home. He was the son of Thornton and Annie McLemore Baugh, an aristocratic family of Southern birth. He was married first to Miss Susie McLemore and to this marriage one son was born, Robert L. Baugh, Jr., who survives. His second marriage was to Miss Charley McLemore.
Funeral arrangements were made today through Robinson & Cutler, local funeral directors, with members of the family in Memphis. The body of the deceased will reach LaFayette via Opelika about one o'clock Thursday and funeral service will be held from the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the LaFayette Cemetery.
Other details of the funeral arrangements were not available and will appear in a subsequent edition of this paper.

R. L. Baugh.

The remains of R. L. Baugh reached LaFayette Thursday; the funeral services were at the Methodist Church at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Rev. John Sturdivant, assisted by Rev. J. B. Sturdivant, assisted by Rev. J. B. Laseter, conducted the tender impressive service. Interment was in the Allen lot in the city cemetery, beside his first wife. Pallbearers were Messrs. J. C. Griffin, Tom G. Pearce, A. E. Day, C. W. Griffin, Dr. J. M. Abney, Dr. G. W. Slaughter, Judge C. E. Fuller, Judge W. B. Bowling.
Mr. Baugh joined the Methodist Church in 1892 under the ministry of an uncle of Rev. John Sturdivant; he loved the Methodist church. He loved LaFayette and wished to spend his last days at the ancestral home of his uncle, Col. J. J. McLemore, now the home of his cousins, Miss McLemore and Mrs. D. A. Holmes.
R. L. Baugh's death occurred at the home of his son, R. L. Baugh, Jr., at Memphis, Tenn., at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He had an attack of flu in January which left him in agonizing peritoneum trouble.
R. L. Baugh served his life work with the Central Railroad being in the employ forty-nine years, during this time he held a number of high official positions. In 1890 he had a serious illness while agent at Augusta, Ga., at his request he was moved to the agency at LaFayette until he recovered his health. In 1896 he was recalled to Augusta as General Freight Agent, later sent to Savannah as Purchasing Agent for the Central R. R. and Ocean Steamship Line, which position he held until his health failed from paralysis. Although treated by the best medical and surgical skill of New York, no improvement was possible. In September 1927, after the second serious attack of paralysis, he was moved to Memphis.
R. L. Baugh was a man of broad charity, a cultured gentleman, one of nature's noblemen. He was a member of two of the old South's most aristocratic families, being a son of Thornton and Annie McLemore Baugh, a grandson of Hon. Charles McLemore, of whom it was said "McLemore is the synonym of honor," his family descended from Robert the Bruce of Scotland. He was married to his cousin, Susie McLemore, January 24th, 1886. R. L. Baugh, Jr., is a son of this union. December 12, 1899, he married his cousin, Charley McLemore, who survives him.
Mr. Baugh is survived by his wife, his son, R. L. Baugh, Jr., one sister, Mrs. J. S. Moore, of Columbus, Ga., and a number of relatives. Accompanying the remains to LaFayette were Mrs. R. L. Baugh, Sr., R. L. Baugh, Jr., D. G. Allen, Miss Elizabeth McLemore Christopher, of Memphis; Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Moore and Miss Hortense Moore, of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. J. L. Powell, of Birmingham.
