"The LaFayette Sun" - September 11, 1898:

Tragical Death Of Dr. D. A. Holmes.

The announcement of the death of Dr. D. A. Holmes was a great shock to our town. Last Friday he had his office in Dadeville to attend a professional call and before he had reached the outskirts of the town the automobile in which he was riding went over an embankment and in the wreck, he was fatally hurt. Up to Sunday afternoon his injuries were not considered fatal, but in the afternoon he became rapidly worse and during the night of Sunday he passed away. On Monday Mr. W. B. Nichols went to Dadeville with his auto hearse after the remains; he was accompanied by Miss Bettie McLemore, the sister of Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Ida Schuessler, Mr. Chas. W. Griffin, Mr. Harry Nichols and Mr.Gilder Pate. The funeral party returning reached LaFayette at 5:30 in the afternoon and the body was taken to the home where a large number of friends had assembled in respect to the memory of the deceased. Accompanying the party were the following friends from Dadeville: Rev. J. E. Mason, pastor of the Dadeville Methodist Church, Rev. M. R. Myer, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Douville, Mrs. W. W. Hicks, Mrs. Berthold Johnson and Mr. E. G. Avery. At 6 o'clock p.m., the funeral service was held at the Baptist Church, of which Dr. Holmes was a member. The service ws conducted by Rev. J. E. Morris, a very intimate friend of the deceased, who paid an eloquent and tender tribute to his memory. Rev. H. R. Arnold, Rev. L. A. Holmes and Rev. W. C. Bledsoe also made a few appropriate remarks. Interment was made in the LaFayette Cemetery. Dr. Holmes was 68 years of age. On Dec. 24th, 1891, he was married to Miss Mary Lou McLemore in the LaFayette Baptist Church, Dr. W. C. Bledsoe, at that time the pastor, officiating.
Dr. Holmes had a host of friends wherever he was known. A Christian man, unselfish, great-hearted, kind and generous he made friends wherever he was known. A devoted husband, he leaves a heart-broken widow to mourn his loss. Other relatives and many friends are made sad by his tragical death.
