LEWISTON - Eugene Alexander Welenteichick Sr. (Lt. Col., U.S.A.F., retired), died Tuesday, April 19, at Central Maine Medical Center. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Nov. 30, 1923, the son of Joseph John and Malania Nutzij Welenteichick. On Jan. 13, 1951, he married Mary Eva Gilmore.

He enlisted in the Navy and served three and a half years as a radio man on bombers and then enlisted in the Air Force, where he attended navigation school and was an instructor at Randolph Field. From navigation he went to weather and was transferred to Iceland, during which time he received his bachelor's degree in meteorology. He was transferred to New Jersey and then Japan.

While in Japan, he attended the University of Hawaii Tropical Weather School. He retired as a Lt. Col. from Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, N.H. He then began his teaching career, receiving his master's degree in education from the University of New Hampshire and then taught school in Arundel. He received his doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University, Peabody School. He was school superintendent in Vinalhaven and retired as superintendent of schools in Mechanic Falls/Minot/Poland.

He was a 37-year member of the American Legion Post No. 150 in Mechanic Falls, where he held various offices, including adjutant for 14 years. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 28 AF & AM in Bordentown, N.J. He became affiliated with Tyrian Lodge No. 73 AF & AM in Mechanic Falls and was worshipful master in 1994 and '95. He was past district deputy, grand master of the 23rd Masonic District, past high priest of St. Andrews RAC No. 51, 14 degree member Valley of Androscoggin Scottish Rites, a 32nd degree member Valley of Portland, Dunlap Council Royal and Select Masters, past commander Lewiston Commandery No. 6 Knights Templer, Eusebius No. 3 Red Cross of Constantine, Supreme Council of Lexington, Mass.

Survivors include his wife of Poland; a son, Eugene A. Welenteichick Jr. of Poland; a granddaughter, Lindsay Morin and her husband, Eric of Winthrop; and a sister, Margaret Wellen of New York.
