LaVerne Paul "Jim" Thorp, Obituary

Of Davison, age 77, died after a gallant battle with Cancer, Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, MI, Pastor Karl Zeigler officiating. Interment in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from Noon to 8:00 p.m. A Masonic Memorial will be 7:00 p.m. Sunday by the Mt. Moriah Lodge #226, F & AM.

Jim was born June 9, 1931 in Kingston, MI, to Paul J. and Ella (Curry) Thorp, raised on a farm in Wells Township, Tuscola County, and attended Berry (country) school through the 8th grade. Jim worked as a day laborer on farms, and building farm silos until 18 years of age. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, taking basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He spent 3 years in the service including one-year terms in Korea during the heat of that conflict. Upon his return to civilian life, he took an apprenticeship with Perry Printing Co.

Jim married Barbara Jean DeGrow (who survives him) in Flint and celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2004. His hobbies were "anything with an engine" and he enjoyed, and owned, motorcycles, sports cars, airplanes, trucks and autos, and loved to fly, work on, and maintain all of them.

Five children were born to that union with Barbara; Michael J. Thorp (Ginny) of Flint, Vickie Hammer of Davison, David J. (Kim) Thorp of Flint, Kenneth L. (Caren) Thorp of Vassar, and Shari Lee (Geoffrey) DeLoge of Columbiaville. He is also survived by 6 grandsons and 5 granddaughters, 2 brothers; Richard L. (Nila) and Gerald F. (Sharon) and sister-in-law Eileen, all of Caro; special friends Phyllis Becker, Tony Bielec, Nancy Hill, Sandy Horner, Bruce and Cheryl Koch, and Jim Teeple. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother Douglas W. He is also survived by 3 nieces and 3 nephews, 2 grand nieces and 2 grand nephews.

He joined the Caro V.F.W. Post #4164 in May 1962, where he was a Life Member. Burial will have full Military Honors provided by Caro V.F.W. Post #4164 along with the U.S. Army. Raised on March 29, 1972 he was an active member and Past Master of Mt. Moriah Lodge #226, Free and Accepted Masons, a Life Member of Caro Chapter #96, Royal Arch Masons in Caro, Life Member of Cass City Council, #90, Royal and Select Masons of Cass City, Life Member of Bay City Scottish Rite bodies and Elf Khurafeh Shrine, working many years at the Flint Shrine Circus, and serving as Commander of their Legion of Honor Unit. His Masonic memberships were held in high regard and attending lodge was among his greatest pleasures.

Jim retired from Yellow Freight Lines after 20 years of highway driving in June of 1988. In recent years he enjoyed working "on call" for Hill Funeral Home in Grand Blanc. He leaves a legacy of love and loyal friendship to his family and many friends. Arrangements by Hill Funeral Home in Grand Blanc. Memorials may be made to Mt. Moriah Scholarship Endowment, The American Cancer Society, or the Tall Pine Council – Boy Scouts of America.
