Alphonso was the son of Benajah Minor and Almira Melissa Buell. He had sisters Fanny M and Almira M who died while they were living in Exeter, Ostego, New York. Alphonso and his brothers, Alvin, William and Herbert, moved with the family from Exeter to Iowa about 1853. Alphonso and his cousin Jeremiah, joined the Iowa 31st Infantry Regiment in September, 1862. Alphonso was a drummer. Neither he nor his cousin saw any Civil War action. They both were in St. Louis with a serious case of dysentery. Alphonso recovered, and was mustered out of his Regiment in February 1863 and returned home. His his cousin, Jeremiah III House, died and is buried in The St. Louis National Cemetery. Alphonso was 5'7", with ruddy color hair, and narrow frame (Military records) He married Annette (his childhood sweetheart while in Exeter, NY), and farmed in the Mechanicsville, Iowa area. They had one child named George Martin. Alphonso was a farmer by trade and a noted carpenter. He farmed near Olin, IA, next to his father-in law, George F. House and his Uncle, Jeremiah II House.
