William "Clyde" Battles, 94, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare Center in Clovis following an illness. The son of William J. Battles and the former Ena Bray, he was born April 29, 1909, in Little Rock, Ark. His family homesteaded 13 miles east of Santa Rosa, where he attended school. The family moved to Hereford, Texas, in 1921, where they farmed at ranched. He married Emma Lestina Williams on Aug. 24, 1946, at Amherst, Texas, and the couple made their home in House in 1949. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by a daughter: Peggy Sue Tivis and husband, Danny, House, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma "Cutie" Battles on March 3, 2000, a brother, Homer Battles on Sept. 2, 2002, and a sister, Hazel Dale in 1964. Services were Tuesday morning in the House Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherman Martin officiating. Burial was to follow at the House Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Monty Tivis, Trevor Tivis, Kelly Miller, Ross Sinclair, Charles Franklin and Clifford Franklin. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Franklin, Lloyd Morrow, Eldon Blackburn and Henry Jaramillo. The family suggests memorials to the House EMS Service, c/o Village of House, NM 88121 or the Baptist Children's Home.
