On March 5, 1868, Laura Leister married an American Civil War hero Sgt. Charles Wesley Cooley (1844-1891). The next year, a son, Sherman Cooley was born. Around 1870, the Cooley family headed west towards Lathrop ('the mule capitol of the world') and began farming in Clinton County, Missouri. In Missouri, Laura gave birth to Ed, Frank and Lillie Cooley (see photo).
In the spring of 1879, the Cooley's, along with Laura's father, began the long, two-thousand mile walk on the weather-beaten Oregon trail, from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Washington Territory. In 1879, Charles Cooley, Jr. was born near Salem, Marion County, Oregon. In the spring of 1880, the Cooley family settled on a fertile piece of land with a spectacular view of Mount Hood. After digging a well at the base of Cooley Butte, they began farming a homestead of 160 acres of wheat land overlooking the tranquil town of Goldendale in Klickitat County, Washington.
In 1882 and 1889, Laura and Dorence Cooley were born at the base of Cooley Butte near Goldendale, WA. In 1889, Charles suffered a massive stroke and later died of a second stroke on May 3, 1891. In 1895, Laura remarried Joseph H. Wilder. By 1908, she had moved to Modesto, California where she witnessed the marriage of her youngest son Dorence Cooley.
After 1911, Laura moved to Marshfield, Coos County, Oregon to be near two of her children Ed Cooley and Lillie Cooley Burford (see photo). On September 25, 1917 Laura Leister Cooley Wilder died. She is buried in Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, Coos Bay, Oregon.
