He was educated in the public schools, excepting one year at the Classical Academy at Albany, N. Y. He has been a farmer from early manhood, and for over thirty years was engaged, first, in the manufacture of lumber, and later, in the sale of lumber and coal. He has held many positions of trust and responsibility, as executor, administrator, and trustee, for estates, etc. Since his residence in his adopted village, he has been for nine years secretary and treasurer of the Cemetery Association, was for fourteen years a member of the Board of Education, was chairman of the Board of Water Commisioners at the time the water-works were built, and for the last fifteen years has been secretary and treasurer of the Warwick Savings Bank, which he organized in 1875, and of which he has had the general management to the present time. In politics he acted with the Free-soil and Republican parties until 1872; since then with those favoring civil-service and revenue-reform.
"Mr. Thomas Burt has an old deed with Seaborn Burt's signature, dated March 12, 1749/50, deeding land to his brother Daniel.
Mrs. Burt is the daughter of Benjamin Sayer.
