Richard R Brege, 54, of 1489 W Third Street, died on Thursday at Northern Michigan Hospitals, Petoskey. His untimely death was attributed to leukemia for which he had been treated during the past several months.

A lifelong resident of the county, he was born June 18, 1928 in Rogers City. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Brege of Moltke Township where he grew up. His marriage to Lu Ella (sic) Lamb of Rogers City took place in Moltke September 4, 1948.

As a teenager, Mr. Brege became employed by the Bradley Transportation Company (now included in U.S. Steel's Great Lake Fleet). After sailing 32 years he retired at the age of 49 as chief engineer of the SS John C Munson.

A faithful member of St John Lutheran Church, he was the church's financial secretary. He was a member of the St John Adult Choir, and a member of the Fellowship Club and the Lutheran Brotherhood. Only days before his death he participated in the presentation of a Christmas program by the choir.

A highly talented man, Mr. Brege had a private pilot's license and owned his own plane. Another hobby, one which had interested him since childhood, grew into a business in his retirement years that could well have occupied him full time. Self-taught, guided by magazines and manuals, and working with both hand and power tools, he utilized his skill at carving wood to create a wide variety of beautiful objects. Spinning wheels, bellows, ducks, a child's rocking horse or a hand carved chess set might take shape in his basement workshop to please a customer. Many of the items were special orders. Some of the ship's wheels used in the nautical decorations in local businesses were his creations. Each August at festival time in Rogers City he displayed his work at the craft show in the courthouse square.

Three years ago he began taking it to other arts and craft shows which not only brought him new customers but interesting experiences. The spinning wheels he made, which proved increasingly popular, are completely workable, as was demonstrated at one show by a young woman from Denmark who actually spun on one.

Mr. and Mrs. Brege enjoyed traveling and a trip they made to Hawaii gave him the opportunity to purchase wood not readily available in this area. Rosewood, teak, Koa, zebra wood and others with exotic-sounding names contribute to the beauty of his work, though he favored cherry and maple.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Brege is survived by two sons: Owen and Neil, both of Rogers City; one grandchild, and two sisters: Leona (Mrs. George) Spens of Hawks and Adelia (Mrs. Clarence) Pilarski of Rogers City.

There was a prayer service at McWilliams Funeral Home at eight o'clock Saturday evening. Funeral services were held at St John Lutheran Church Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Molzan officiating. Pallbearers were Dan Pilarski, Renwood Schaedig, Ivan Buck, Marin Pauly, Chester Winfield and Ben Strzelecki. Interment was in Rogers City Memorial Park.
