Helen and Thomas Elliott were instrumental in the founding of Pasadena in 1874. Helen is known as the Mother of Pasadena. Thomas gave the city its name. Their story is recorded in a 1990 article in Californian History, "Taking the Country Barefooted: The Indiana Colony in Southern California" by historian James Madison.
