Obituary of Charles Merten Chase
The news of the death of "Mert" Chase of Mendota came over the wire Tuesday afternoon as a great shock to his many friends in this community where he resided for several years.
Mr. Chase had been a brakeman on this branch of the C.B. & Q. for the past eight or ten years and had been recently promoted to conductor on the Streator freight train.
His family and attending physicians were greatly shocked at his sudden death, as he was thought to be getting along nicely.
His was a life of faithful service in the duties that devolved upon him as husband and father and his many friends join the family in mourning his untimely departure from this life.
Charles Merten Chase, son of Mrs. And Mrs. D.W. Chase, was born at Dover, Ill., Dec. 23, 1877, and died at his home in Mendota, Ill., Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1913, of Pneumonia, at two o'clock p.m., at the age of 35 years and 28 days.
He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Corl in Walnut, Ill., Nov. 7th, 1897. To this union three sons were born, Ivan, Leland and Corl.
Besides his wife and three sons he is survived by his father, who resides in Manlius, three brothers, Harry of Alburnett, Iowa, and Arthur and Henry of Bureau Co., and two sisters Mrs. F. Nienaber of Princeton and Mrs. W. Baker of Aurora.
The deceased was a member of the Mystic Works and B. of R.T.
The funeral was conducted from his late home in Mendota by Rev. W.F. Shaw of Chicago, who also married them sixteen years ago, and the remains were laid away in the Restland cemetery at Mendota, Ill.
