Wilbert was the son of James Finley and Nancy Jane (Williams) Helms. He married Amy Augusta Carter on September 29, 1888 in Matthews, Grant County, Indiana.

Fairmount - Wilbert A. Helms, 85, who lived southeast of Fowlerton, died in the Marion General Hospital at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Surviving are the widow, Amy; two daughters, Mrs. Ivalou Tomlinson, R. R. 6, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Rhoda Kimes of Marion; four sons, Clyde, R. R. 1, Jonesboro, Dale, Muncie, Carter of R. R. 2, Fairmount, and Lloyd of Bowling Green, Ky.; one half sister, Mrs. D. E. Rhoades of Dunkirk, and 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
