BIG STONE GAP, VA. — James Patton "J. P." Horton , Jr., 93, passed away Friday (July 10, 2009) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.

He was born and raised in the Rye Cove section of Scott County, Va., and was the youngest of eight children by James P. and Ellen Cox Horton , Sr.

Mr. Horton was a graduate of Rye Cove High School, Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Houston (Tex.). He was a teacher by profession, having served as a classroom teacher, high school principal and division superintendent.

He served as president of the Scott County Education Association and the Wise County Education Association.

Mr. Horton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served three years in the Pacific Theater as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander of the 112th Calvary. He was awarded the Bronze Star for reconnaissance work in the Philippines.

He served two years as a professor of Military Science and Tactics at Milby High School in Houston, Tex.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap, where he taught Sunday school for many years and also served the church in many capacities.

During retirement, Mr. Horton served as a member of the Wise County Planning Commission, the Big Stone Gap Housing Authority and the Wallens Ridge Development Corporation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jo Horton ; his daughter, Martha Jane Horton ; three brothers, Robert Horton , Frank Horton and Ernest Horton ; and four sisters, Maude Lacey, Mary Buchanan, Vivian "Tootie" Wood and Anne Horton .

Surviving are his son, John Horton , of the home; and several nieces and nephews.

Military rites by the Kingsport V.F.W. Post #4933, Boone Dam Post, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Kingsport. Following will be a graveside service conducted by Dr. Joseph T. Miller and the Rev. Ronnie Mutter.

Family and friends will gather at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 217, Big Stone Gap, Va. 24219.
