STUART — Rita Marie Arens, 86, Stuart, died Aug. 5, 2011, at the Parkside Manor, Stuart.

Funeral services were Aug. 8 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Stuart, with Father Luke Steffes officiating. Father James Hunt, Father James Heithoff and Father John Broheimer concelebrated.

Interment was in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Stuart.

Honorary casket bearers were all of Rita's 48 grandchildren.

Rita Marie Arens was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Bow Valley, to William and Mary (Arens) Heimes. She was one of nine children and attended school through the eighth grade. She was a hard worker at home helping with her father, as well as her sisters, as their children came along. Rita often told how her father said she could pick corn faster than her brothers and so had her own team and wagon. She married Francis Arens March 4, 1946, in Bow Valley. They had 11 children.

Rita loved to garden, up until her later years and always had a beautiful yard full of flowers, especially her climbing roses. There was always cooking, canning and baking in raising a large family. She was the best pie baker around, along with all the cinnamon or pineapple rolls. Of course, the grandchildren always enjoyed the offer of her famous chocolate chip cookies. Rita was no stranger to a sewing machine, sewing clothes for all of her children. From bridesmaid dresses to baby blankets for every one of her grandchildren, to denim quilts for them later on.

She loved to play cards and always had the love of music and dancing.

Survivors include children and spouses, Jim and Joani Arens, Ainsworth; Mary and Don Merkel, Castle Rock, Colo.; Frank and Marcia Arens Valentine; Priscilla and Ray Keogh, Stuart; Mike and Charlotte Arens, Springview; Ruth and Ed O'Brien, Tilden; Ann and Ralph Olberding, Stuart; Bonnie and Tom Krysl, Stuart; Kathy and Bob Kunz, Stuart; Mark Arens, Ainsworth; and Cindy and Don Hancock, Edwards, Colo.; 48 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; a special sister, Monica Dendinger, Hartington; sisters-in-law, Betty Arens, Crofton; Verena Heimes, Yankton, S.D.; and Mary Ann and husband, Ray Muller, Onawa, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Don Arens, Yankton, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis; grandson, Michael Keogh; brothers, Albert, Leonard, Gilbert, William and Joseph Heimes; and sisters, Clara Dendinger and Theresa Eickhoff.
