Alverda G. Stutzman

NAPPANEE -- Alverda G. Stutzman, 82, of 856 W. Market St., Nappanee, died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Courtyard Healthcare Center, Goshen, after a short illness.

She was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Indiana County, Pa., to Meade B. and Lucinda McDonald Douglas. She was a graduate of Barnsboro High School in Pennsylvania and moved to Nappanee in 1947. Her first marriage was to Jack Williams on Dec. 2, 1950. He preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 1953. She married Alvin L. Stutzman on May 30, 1954. He preceded in death on Feb. 15, 1998.

Alverda had worked as a telephone operator for the Nappanee Phone Company and at Goshen College for nine years. She was a longtime member of Mt. Tabor Church of God and was currently attending Union Center Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Nappanee and attended Real Services at Elder Haus and Nappanee Caregivers.

Surviving are daughters Cindy Stutzman of Nappanee and Cathy (Philip) Stallter of Wakarusa; sons Jack William Stutzman of Texas and Douglas Alvin (Jennifer) Stutzman and Dana Lynn Stutzman, both of Nappanee; grandchildren Jack W. Stutzman Jr., whom she raised, Emma Grimaldo, Matthew Stallter, Sarah VanderReyden and Elizabeth Stallter; great-grandson Noah VanderReyden; and brother the Rev. Tom (Betty) Douglas of Sarasota, Fla.

She was preceded in death by sisters LoLeta Stahl, Martha Stiffler, Mabel Douglas and Vivian Will; and brothers Harley, Sheldon and Dave Douglas.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and for one hour prior to the funeral service, at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Union Center Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Larry Fourman will officiate. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.
