Born in Vandalia, Lewis county, second son of Nicholas D. and Matilda Linger. His father was of German descent. His great-grandfather came to America from Germany during the Revolutionary War and served as a soldier during the war. His mother's maiden name was Bradshaw, she was born in Pocahontas county, then Virginia. Her father, William Bradshaw, was a soldier in the War of 1812. Her mother was Jane Elliott Hickman. In 1880, the subject married A. Eliza Sexton. Seven children, one is deceased. Survived by wife, three sons and three daughters. Buried at Vandalia Cemetery.
