NATCHEZ - Services for Herbert Lee Hughes, 85, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004 at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 1 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Arron McGuffee officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Hughes was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Copiah County, the son of the late Charles Anslom and Bessie Mae Stubbs Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was affectionately known as "Hebert," "Bear" or "Daylight" by his friends at Armstrong Tire and the U. S. Postal Service in Natchez. He served as a Navigator in the U. S. Army Air Corp 4313 DR Bombardier Squadron during World War II and also served in occupied Japan. He retired as a Lt. Colonel with the U. S. Air Force Reserve in 1978.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Lois Marie Hughes of Natchez; daughter, Sherry H. Lee of Hattiesburg; son, Charles E. Hughes of Natchez; three grandchildren, Donald I. Lee of Nashville, Tenn., Harold E. Lee of Hattiesburg, Katrina M. Lee of Natchez; two brothers, Charles A. Hughes Jr. of Natchez and Gordon M. Hughes of Vidalia, La.; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Lee Gillespie, Curt Freeman, George Tarver, Harold James Smith, and David Upton.
