Anthonus J. Butin was an 18-year-old resident of Jasper County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a private February 29, 1864, and was mustered into Company E, 40th Iowa Infantry. Private Butin was severely wounded at Prairie D'Anna, Arkansas, April 10, 1864. After recovering from his wounds he was mustered out for disability at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, August 2, 1865. He filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in Iowa September 11, 1879, and received application No. 308,856 and certificate No. 193,656. After his death Martha filed for a Civil War widow's pension in Iowa November 15, 1920, and received application No. 1,165,809 and certificate No. 896,424.
